Since the speed of the ball coming forward is so slow the only momentum that the hitter can generate is by adding bat speed by using a linear movement, via the body (walking up) to impact on the ball. Normally the speed of the ball contributes to the distance that a ball can travel. I do not have the physics calculations to equate possible distance that a ball can travel after being impacted by another object in front of me but the speed of the ball is very significant part of the equation.
