I Have both of those tapes. Very good study of the golf swing.

Coach C,

Good question. The primary purpose of the backswing in golf is get the golfer into a good hitting position at the top of the backswing, and secondarily to generate the proper rhythm in the swing. Theoretically one could start the swing from the top of the swing and forget the backswing, but no professional does that because of the associated loss of rhythm.

In baseball, I actually think of all pre-launch motion as analagous to the backswing in golf. The stride, separation of the hands from lower body, etc. is done to 1) put the player into the proper launch position, and 2) to generate rhythm in the succeeding swing. These are basically the identical goals of the golf backswing.
