Another alternative to "weathervaning" is Mankin's technique where the bat is pretty much considered an extension of the arm all the way to the ball. The angle will change according to the location of the ball.

By the way Mike, you never mentioned what level of ball you played at. I can see you getting excited at hitting some good shots in batting practice using high hands. Believe me if you are already encountering difficulties with the high hands wait until you face varsity high school pitchers who throw heat. Hopefully you'll follow some/all of my advise and won't get cut before you reach that level.

Finding a good hitting coach who is familiar with your swing would certainly help. Unfortunately that's easier said than done.
