Picking up the ball

I am having a problem picking up the ball until it is about half way to the plate, which is to late to decide if i am going to triger or not. What should I be focusing on to pick up the pitch ASAP? Secondly, when in the pitchers motion is the right time to start your move towards the pitcher and to get your wrists cocked?
