it is not the bat dia that slows the batspeed dwn. it is the weight. if the kid can swing a heavy bat then let them. Junior high will be there soon and he will have to swing a -3. Work on the swing and build up the strenth. I feel the -12 bat is very bad for baseball. Kids get to Junior high or even High school and never can adjust to the weight of the bat. They have to drop way dwn to smaller lenth bat to make up the difference. At 12 your son should be 5'5" or around there. He should be using 31" bat. that should be 22 oz or something around there (big barrel).
