In fact it is harder to bend the knees as much from a run, so it should result in less vertical leap. But it does not. The running start is energy in the system. It can be redirected/converted. If it is directed upwards, there is more energy for a running leap than for a standing leap, therefore you can jump higher with a running start.
> The hip slide (stride or no stride) is the runnning start. The front leg redirecting the energy is the same as the jumper's jump - both convert linear momentum into something else. The jumper redirects it in another linear direction, the hitter redirects it into rotational/angular momentum.

> Any thoughts on this?. ..>>Jack, has called the stride a timing step and I believe he is right but also more than that as you have pointed out.See we use the stride to time the pitch so when you are ready to swing you land the front toe and move right in to the swing smoothly and all you have mentioned M.D. is right on target.I can remember when I faced a slow pitcher I could slow my stride down or start later with the stride,just like I did with 2 strikes,however with a fast pitcher I may start earlier or just think pick it up and put it down.This was to time a pitch to keep it moving.On curve balls I often had that static move in which I stopped my forward movement with a bent front leg waited then rotated,I think this is actually what people see when they say he got fooled but kept his hands back,actually you keep your hips cocked and the front knee bent and on the toe then just rotate.
