Wide stance = good?? How wide??

Is a wide stance good?? It seems to me like the wider the stance the more balance. Let's forget about the actual stance because that's just preference but let's just say that a wider stride. It seems like there would be more balance this way and balance is good. Do you think in any way this can help with better mechanics?? What's the advantage of a wider stance/stride??
