Jeff,

Yes, you are right. The lead arm will of course straighten out as you bring your hands back. As long as the elbows stay tight to the body. If the elbows begin to extend away from the body, it will decrease bat speed. The torque produced from your spin explodes as your arms extend. If the arms extend too early, the torque will explode too early. During my hitting lessons, I tell my kids to watch Darrin Erstad and Jim Thome. They are excellent at keeping their hands and elbows in until they are ready to explode.
