This is the way I am used to seeing torque described:

The animated image is quite enlightening too. It shows that torque changes direction (is being applied differently) when it is applied to slow down a rotating object too.

The "Whip" that Chris seems to imply looks like the same thing that is produced with your Pathfinder bat, and so it does not account for all that is happening with a regular bat as you have shown before.
