Hi McTim

If the ball is hit straight-away (bat perpendicular to ball flight), contact is usually made about even with the lead-knee (much farther back than extension mechanics). If the batter pulls the ball he will make contact farther out – closer to the instep. Good rotational hitters can hit straight-away (or even pull) pitches on the outside portion of the plate. Therefore, he can make contact around the lead-knee regardless of where the ball is pitched. With rotational mechanics, timing (ahead or behind) is probably more important in determining the contact point than ball placement.
