IMO a firm front leg would:

1) Discontinue the movement forward, thus prevent 'lunging' towards the ball allowing the ball to travel TO the batter.
2) Most important, aide in full opening rotation of the front hip, and as it straightens stiff, allowing the batter to stay back and also giving that last momentun in the arm and shoulder in BHT thru follow thru.
But this sounds more like a 'setup' question Mike. What are you gonne bombard us with?
