If you want the science, I can't help you. I go with Ted's advice to swing the heaviest bat you can swing fast.

I have heard many times that batspeed is the most important factor, but my own intuitive belief is that the energy created by the marriage of Mass and speed can be positively affected by an increase in either one.

again my personal observation is that a heavier bat tends to hit the ball farther. No science to back that up, just observation. Maybe the kids swinging the heavier bats are stronger, which brings up another point- when calculating the mass of the bat, would one also consider the mass of the batter? a strong batter with a strong grip, I would think, would increase the mass on the bat side of the collision.
