I would say, that if he is just starting out (5-8 years old). I would let him try it. I know many kids that throw right and bat left. I feel that you can get more pwr by pulling the bat with your strong arm (right) then you can with your left. I wished I would have done this with my son at 5. He is now 11 and working on switch hitting. He has great batspeed but his control and contact is off. Just work in progress on the left side for us.
The left side of the plate opens more to bunting and hitting behind runners (inside pitch). I feel you cant go wrong teaching him that.
