Guru,
I really don't understand what the age-long confusion is. If you want to send ANY object in any direction, you MUST swing in that intended direction. If you swing down, guess what....that's where the ball travels. When you miss-hit on a downward swing you get backspin, without much FORWARD motion. Which makes for a ball a fielder can get UNDER. I agree with Jack, if this tomahawk cut (here we go with the many terms again) works, I EXPECT mlb players to utilize it in MULTITUDES. I simply do not see it. I am tired of people like you coming up with rare things rare players do. Swinging in the ball's plane (level in itself)gives any batter a larger window of contact. Using rotational mechanics affords you to generate more energy for force at contact. If Schmidt or anyone else use anything otherwise, simply means that they have extraordinay good timing to hit in a smaller window, and it means that they use the smaller muscles in their body to generate the energy needed for the result they want. Which doesn't make sense to me. Simple experiment: Hammer a nail in wood using all the power in your arm and hand. Tell me how many times you miss? Now, use your body for most of the momentum and use your arm and hand merely as a guide rail. Tell me what drives the nail in further and most importantly, tell me how many times to make contact.
Better yet, videotape yourself with your linear standpoint. Show us the benefits of the tomahawk cut. I can't find none of the MLB players doing it. If we want to be elite hitters, why are we doing everything else BUT what those elite hitters are doing. Imitation is the best form of flattery, AND learning.
I have hundreds of videos of hundreds of MLB players, AT RANDOM, using core mechanics found in Rotational mechanics. What Bonds says he does in his swing, is completely different than what slow motion video analysis says he does. GO FIGURE.
For the record, since practicing Rotational mechanics, I have improved my batting averages enourmously. At 37 years of age I am competing with College students!!!!
BTW....I sent my little league coach a letter stating to him that I appreciate him taking away from my potential by teaching us the liner technique. That uses cues meant for the rotational swing...
Dennis
