Fastpitch Hitting Mechanics - Linear vs Rotational Mechanics

Posted by: Jack Mankin (MrBatspeed@aol.com) on Mon Dec 10 15:09:59 2012

Hi All

Note: The efficiency of a mechanic to generate bat speed is the same for any bat. Therefore, the conclusions we draw for these fastpitch hitters also apply to the baseball swing

Over the past few years I have taught the Rotational batting principles featured on this Web Site to hundreds of my students -- both Male and Female. Although many of them fly in for "hands-on" lessons, most received instruction by sending me a CD with video clips of their swing for my analysis.

It is very gratifying to hear from students that are excelling and able to play ball at a higher level. However, I am equally perplexed with the number of e-mails and phone calls I receive complaining that their coaches are trying, and in some cases 'demanding', that they adapt to the linear principles and cues they are teaching.

It appears from the number of complaints I receive from my female students that the demands from Linear Coaches are even more pervasive in Fastpitch Softball than Baseball. Most of their complaints follow a common theme -- Their coaches tell them that Rotational Swing Mechanics may be okay for the Baseball swing, but due to the "rise ball" and other aspects of Fastpitch hitting -- Rotational Mechanics will not work in high level Softball.

Well, are they right -- are linear cues and principles more suited for Fastpitch hitting than Rotational principles? With that mind, I have decided to produce a series of videos addressing this question. In each video I will show some of the best college Fastpitch hitters' swings frame-by-frame and address one of the linear cues listed below and ask ---

Are they adhering to linear principles -- or -- Do they exhibit the Rotational teaching of this Site?

High Back Elbow – Good or Bad?

* "Don't Cast" -- "Keep Your Hands In-side The Ball"

* ”Get Your Arms Extended”

* "Swing Down" -- "Keep The Bat-Head Above The Ball"

* "Rise Ball" "Don't Hit Around The Ball" "Swing Through The Ball"

I will make the links above live as soon as they are available

There will probably be more, but right now there are 11 videos being produced. I will place them on this Discussion Board and our ( mrbatspeed ) Youtube Channel as soon as they are completed.
